Consignment Shops {U-Turn}

Have you ever looked in your closet and ask yourself, “do I really wear all of this?” Well, this happens to me quite often. And to make matters worse, some of those things jammed way in the back still have tags on them. I often take clothing to goodwill, but wondered if I could get money for some of these expensive clothes that are gently used or, in come cases, brand new. Well, thanks to the resurgence of consignment shops, now I can!

Last summer, a new consignment shop opened in Milwaukee called U-Turn. I dropped off about 15 items and 2 months later they sent me a $74 check! I was amazed and now have made it my mission to go through my closet every couple months to get rid of the things I don’t wear. It is a win-win, my closet gets more organized and I get a little extra spending money.

I sat down with the ladies of U-Turn, Deb and Jessica, to ask them about how they run their store and what kinds of things they look for when accepting clothing.

Why did you decided to open the shop?

Deb and I have known each other since our boys were in senior kindergarten. Deb does finance in the car industry and I am a Speech Pathologist. We were both looking for a change, although we both still work in our professions on a limited basis since opening a business is a scary thought at times! We had been talking and throwing out ideas for businesses one summer night at a friend’s backyard fire pit, but nothing seemed good at the time.

Then one fall morning Deb saw me at school drop off, and asked what I thought about a young adult consignment shop. I said I had never really considered it before, but we started doing our research. The next thing you know we were asking family and friends what they thought of various names for the shop and standing in front of the city board with our business plan!

Explain to me how U Turn works. What kinds of items will you accept?

Although our original intent was to focus on teens and provide both men’s and women’s clothing, we have evolved to offer mostly women’s clothing. We love our faithful men shoppers, but let’s face it, most of the shopping is done by girls and women, so our men’s section has dwindled to a rack or two.

We prefer styles that are current. Items that sell quickly are higher end brands and pieces from boutiques – anything different and original. We are not brand specific.   Customers love clothing that has never been worn or looks barely worn. As a first time consignor, think about if you or your best friend would still wear it out around town and let that be your guide for if you should bring it in.

We accept sizes from 14/16 juniors to Woman’s size 18. We may occasionally turn away a size if we have too much of it in stock, or ask that you hold on to it and bring it back at a later time.

How do consignors make money?

When we sell an item the consignor makes 40% of the sale. We pay out when their account hits $20.00 or all the items in their account have sold. They just drop off the clothes and we take care of the rest!

Do you have any tips for people who would like to bring in clothing and accessories sell?

Potential consignors can download a copy of the consignment policy from the website here and fill it out ahead of time. Consignors should have clothing pressed and cleaned and on hangers. It is much easier and faster for us to go through them this way. When potential consignors bring in clothing, they can shop around while we go through the items. The whole process should only take about 10-15 minutes depending on the amount of items you bring in or how busy we are. If a consignor’s items are sold, they can either have the money via check or come to U-Turn and use the accrued money in their account for in store credit.

Do you only sell consignment clothing?

We also sell items for local artist. We do ask that they use some type of recycle/reuse with their products. We have some great artists in here.

I can tell that you try to make your store “green.” What kinds of things to you do to create less waste in the world?

We try to make our carbon footprint as small as possible. Our shopping bags are made from tee-shirts donated by customers and friends, a bundle of 10 will get you 5% off one item. If a customer brings back the bag to use for another shopping trip they will get 10 cents off their order. We also do carry a few new line items also that support the environment. Our Tees for change for example, the company plants a tree with every sale of a shirt. Our snack bags are great for reducing the amount of plastic baggies we use in our lunches.

I love the thought of  recycling clothing and it makes me feel like I am still helping to minimize my carbon footprint…every little bit helps!  And, best of all, I have picked up many unique and one of a kind items at U-Turn.

Do you have a consignment shop in your area?  Just do a quick internet search…and then go attack that closet!

Happy Cleaning!

Retail Replicate: DIY Moss Topiary

When it comes to spring decor, I’m not really a bunnies-and-eggs kind of girl.  I tend to opt for natural, earthy items in wishful hopes that I can make the warm weather come faster.

So on recent stroll through Pottery Barn while ogling their rustic farmhouse accessories I spotted some fun moss topiaries and thought “I could totally make those.” I often say this and rarely actually do it (c’mon, you know you do it too) but this was just too easy to pass up…plus, it was a perfect way to get my spring fix.
How to Make a Moss Topiary

What you’ll need:
4″ and/or 5″ styrofoam floral ball
styrofoam square
sheet moss
green embroidery thread (match color to moss)
twig (approximately finger width in size)
burlap
4″ and/or 5″ clay pot
ribbon
newspaper or other stiff paper

Instructions:
I cut my plastic sheet and place a chunk of sheet moss on the ball. Holding onto the moss, use your thumb to hold the end of the embroidery thread onto the middle of the moss. Wrap the thread around the ball repeatedly, varying the direction of your wrap to hold the moss in place and flatten out major lumps. Repeat the process several times until the whole ball is covered and fairly uniform in shape. Use your fingers or a needle to run the thread under existing wraps and tie it off.

DIY spring decor

Trim foam square to fit inside your pot. Place the square in the bottom of the pot and fill in empty space with newspaper (I used torn up brown paper bags). Cut twig to desired height with a garden shears. Push one end into the moss ball and the other end into the foam square in the pot and straighten. Add more paper to support the twig and add volume if needed.

Trim burlap into a square and wrap around pot, folding fabric over itself to create a tight wrap. Secure with ribbon and trim excess burlap at the top to desired height.

BONUS!
If you have extra moss or don’t feel like dealing with the burlap, here are two other options that could substitute for or complement your topiaries around your house! Swapping decorative elements in a simple hurricane vase is a cheap and easy way to change up your seasonal decor.

Lions and Tigers and Bears…Oh My! A Safari Baby Shower

As some of you know, fellow HAP blogger Stef is pregnant with her first child.  Katie and I got together to throw her a baby shower for close friends. We knew her nursery was a safari theme, so we decided to throw her a “Lions and Tigers and Bears…oh my!” themed shower.

Lions, Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

The invitations were created by Katie and set the tone for the adorable party.

The table was set with burlap fabric and a tiger print runner, which we picked up at a fabric store and left unfinished for a rustic feel. Silverware was wrapped in a napkin and tied with coordinating ribbon.

Guests snacked on basil chicken club sandwiches, turkey and cranberry paninis, a mixed green salad and exotic fruit skewers.  All food was served in wood or rustic platters and labeled with place cards also designed by Katie.

Guests enjoyed a tropical punch that was mixed with either champagne or ginger ale.

For dessert, we had Chai Cupcakes with Vanilla Bean Frosting and sugar cookie leaves.

As party favors, everyone was invited to join in the fun of a candy buffet!  The ladies filled spice shaker jars with various green and brown candies to match the decor.  Candies were set out in vases and apothecary jars adorned with raffia and “Lions and Tigers and Bears” theme tags that matched the invitations.

Elemental Party: A Wood-sy Picnic Excursion

Nothing is more appealing to an active Wood than a party that involves “doing” and with a little extra planning you can turn your outdoor activities into a special occasion. On a sunny summer day, I’d plan a picnic shore lunch for a leisurely canoe & fishing trip with a handful of adventurous friends.  Stylish, space-saving gear, picnic-friendly foods and a refreshing fruity cocktail make for a perfect outing.

Earth: A Rustic Outdoor Dinner Party

Earth’s crave comfort and have a need to be surrounded by family and friends in a warm, loving environment.  That’s why I planned a Rustic Outdoor Dinner Party for those who most identify with the Earth Element.  Dinner parties are a great way to reconnect with friends and family and hosting it outside in the late summer months gets rid of any space restraints you may have in your home. It allows for the host to have a party with more space to accommodate all of the guests.  Incorporating burnt orange, natural colors and wood accents sets the stage for the perfect earth dinner party.

Valentine’s Day Breakfast in Bed

This may make me sound like the anti-woman, but Valentine’s Day has never been a big deal  to me. I do however, like to try to find some time to do something special to spend extra time with my man.

Tom works extremely long, hard hours all year-round, so for this Valentine’s Day, I decided to treat him to a little breakfast in bed – or perhaps – breakfast on the couch while watching SportsCenter. With a few cheap (and reusable!) touches from Target, I’ve put together a delectable Cinnamon French Toast with Cranberry Orange Chutney.

Ingredients (for 2):

  • 4 thick slices of brioche*
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 TBSP cinnamon
  • non-stick cooking spray
  • 2 C fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 TBSP orange zest
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg

For Cranberry Orange Chutney:

In a medium sauce plan, mix cranberries, orange juice, orange zest, 1 tsp cinnamon and nutmeg. Bring to a boil. Boil for 3-4 minutes or until cranberries begin to pop. Set aside and allow to cool to room temperature.

For the Cinnamon French Toast:

Preheat griddle. Whisk eggs and milk together in shallow bowl. Add vanilla and cinnamon. Soak each piece of bread for 15 seconds on each side. Spray griddle (set at medium-high) with non-stick cooking spray. Place the bread on the griddle and cook about 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown (time will vary based on the type and temperature of your griddle).

Place french toast on a plate and top it with a spoonful of chutney. Don’t overdo the chutney, you do not want to take away the flavor of the french toast. Or, if you don’t like the taste of cranberries, simply serve with a dusting of powdered sugar and some warm maple syrup. This dish tastes great with an Orange Strawberry Banana Smoothie or a homemade latte.

*A note on bread:  I usually make french toast with whatever bread I have around the house. But if you are looking for the diner taste, go with a loaf of brioche. I picked mine up at Breadsmith. You can also go for challah or a country loaf cut into thick slices. The thicker and denser the bread, the better it soaks up all the good stuff and creates a moist and savory french toast!

Happy Valentine’s Day!
