{GIVEAWAY}: Super Snacks for Super Kids cookbook

Happy weekend to all of our HAP readers! Starting today, you have the fabulous opportunity to win the kid-friendly cookbook, Super Snacks for Super Kids by Sarah Fox MD and Julie Stephenson.

SuperSnacks cover

I attended the UW Writer’s Institute last weekend in Madison (for more on that, you can visit my journey to young adult authorship here) and had the pleasure of meeting the friendly staff of local Little Creek Press in Mineral Point, WI. When I saw this cookbook, my foodie brain kicked into gear. I wanted to land this beauty in the hands of one of our readers!

We’ve touched on the art of toddler food in a few other posts before. As hard as we try, it can be difficult to get healthy foods into the fingers of those finicky toddlers. Written by two moms who care about their kids’ nutrition, Super Snacks for Super Kids began as an initiative to bring in donations for the authors’ school wellness committee. With the help of Little Creek Press, these super moms have raised over $30,000 for their school’s program. All proceeds go to the Mineral Point School District Wellness committee.

In the book, you will find a collection of simple snack recipes packed with the nutrition your kids need to feel energized throughout the day. It’s divided into six sections: Snacks for Focus, Snacks for After School, Snacks for Play, Snacks for After Play, Snacks for A Crowd, and Staples. Each section contains recipes specifically designed to meet kids’ nutritional needs for their various activities.

The recipes in this book involve products that are easy to find and conform to our modern-day time constraints. You will also find tips for choosing the best foods and navigating your way through the grocery store to find the best choices for your wee ones. The book is not just good to read, but filled with beautiful photography, it is lovely to page through.

Authors Julie Stephensen and Sarah Fox also provide a way for you to create a fundraiser using their product. Check out the information on their site to learn how Super Snacks for Super Kids can be a healthy alternative to selling cookies!

So now, it is your chance to win a copy! You have until Thursday, April 25 at 11 pm CST to leave a comment on our blog about your kid’s (or nephew, niece, grandkids, friend’s kid, neighbor) favorite healthy treat! One entry per person. The winner will be announced on Friday, April 26.

You must be 18 and live in the continental United States to enter.

Thanks for entering!

{Giveaway!} Rosy Rings Apothecary Jar Candle Set

A few years ago three girls sat mindlessly chatting about recipes over lunch when the topic of a blog came up. At first it was more of a pop culture discussion than anything until that proverbial light went off. Why not start their own, they thought. It would make all that recipe sharing so much easier and it could be fun(!) and cute(!) – the things you say when you’re a girl. Soon after, our little blog was born.

Things at HAP have changed a bit over the years as our families and jobs have grown and changed. At the end of the day, we write for fun about real things, real food and the special touches of “hauteness” we try to bring to every day things.

In honor of our third blog-iversary, we’re giving away a swoon-worthy candle set with the help of our friends at Rosy Rings! We were smitten with the rustic-chic packaging of their Apothecary Jar Candle line, not to mention the classic-with-a-twist scents they come in like Fireside or Honey Tobacco – so perfect for fall.

Enter to Win!

You may have seen these pretties at Anthropologie or Nordstrom’s but today you can win them right here! In standard blog fashion, there’s a few ways you can enter to win:
1. Leave a comment sharing which Rosy Rings scent would light your fire this fall.
2. Like us on Facebook and leave a comment to let us know.
3. Like Rosy Rings on Facebook and leave a comment to let us know.

We’ll announce a random winner next Monday morning so best of luck! And in case you aren’t the lucky winner, Rosy Rings candles are reasonably priced plus they donate 15% of proceeds to charity every year making them a gift you can feel good about giving…even if it is to yourself.

{GIVEAWAY} Howling Wolf BBQ

This week we are celebrating dads by giving away what dad loves most – BBQ! We have had the honor and privilege of interviewing Ken Wolfe from Howling Wolf Gourmet Foods, who has enlightened us on us culinary BBQ perspective. If reading his story doesn’t make your mouth water for some delicious Father’s Day grilling, we aren’t sure what would! Please take the time to read about Howling Wolf and have the chance to win a BBQ combo pack with a bottle of the Howling Wolf Original BBQ sauce, Land & Sea Rub, and Dry Rub. Giveaway details are below.

Give us the one-minute bio of yourself.

I am a classically trained chef who has always had a passion for sauces, smoked foods, and BBQ. I started my career with a 3 1/2 year culinary apprenticeship in southern California, followed by two years of working as a chef in France. I spent most of my early career as a saucier, before moving up the ranks. Eventually I opened my own restaurant, Cafe Wyoming, in Dubois, Wyoming. At the Cafe, I featured my BBQ sauces and perfected my style of barbecuing. My ribs and sauce were mentioned in Jane & Michael Stern’s Roadfood 2005 edition. After six successful years, I sold the Cafe to focus on my sauces full time. I moved to Wisconsin five years ago and have been in the stores four years.

Tell us a little bit about how Howling Wolf BBQ got started?

I have always had a passion for BBQ growing up and as I progressed in the culinary field I was continually thinking of the possibility of starting a food line to eventually free me from the restaurant business. That line naturally became my own gourmet take on BBQ.

What inspires your BBQ flavors?

I love the diversity of flavors that the spice world offer. Combined with my passion for BBQ, I have been able to create some extra ordinary flavors that are both flavorful and very versatile. For example, My Cranberry Orange BBQ can be used as a glaze for Asian sweet and sour, and my original can be mixed with yogurt and takes on a middle eastern flavor.

Are you a gas or charcoal man?

At times gas is convenient but not only do I prefer charcoal but I prefer to make my own.

Describe your perfect BBQ meal.

I am always happy to devour a rack of perfectly smoked pork spare ribs but nothing beats a beautifully seasoned and smoked pork shoulder sandwich on a homemade roll topped with my homemade aged slaw and a good I.P.A.

How will you be spending your Father’s Day?

I will be doing something outside with my family most likely in the garden and it will most certainly end up with a nice dinner off the grill.

GIVEAWAY DETAILS

In order to win the Howling Wolf BBQ Combo Pack, visit the Howling Wolf website and check out the different products and recipes. Leave us a comment on this post telling us how you would like to use a Howling Wolf product to put a smile on dad’s face this Father’s Day.

Here at Haute Apple Pie we are celebrating our two year anniversary (or as we like to call it, blogversary)! We can hardly believe it has been two full years since our idea came into fruition. Thank you to all of our loyal readers for listening to what we have to share!

Two years seems like a mere grain of sugar in a hot pie compared to the 100 year anniversary local Wisconsin company West Bend Housewares is celebrating this month. 100 years in business is quite a remarkable accomplishment this day and age, so we tip our chef’s hats to them! We are very excited to tell you that we are sharing the spirit of celebration by giving away a West Bend Versatility Slow Cooker this week!

We can’t say enough about how great this slow cooker is, especially if space is limited in your kitchen. Not only is it a slow cooker, but it is a griddle and a warming tray as well. It has four temperature settings and the vessel can be used on the stove top, oven, refrigerator and freezer and it is dishwasher safe! We know many of our readers are avid slow cooking fans, so we are excited that one of you will be the lucky winner of this little beauty!

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.

To enter our giveaway, leave a comment telling us about your favorite meal to make in a slow cooker. You can also get a bonus vote by going over to Facebook and “liking” West Bend. Leave us a comment to tell us you did so! The giveaway ends at midnight (Central Time) on Thursday, September 22, 2011. {Giveaway} James Edward Scherbarth Art and Design

Inspiration can come from so many places. There are very few people I’ve met in life that can turn those inspirations into visual masterpieces, but James Scherbarth is one of them. I’m so happy to introduce everyone to his art and designs. James’ work provides just the touch you might need to tie a room together or an outfit! He has been generous enough to provide us with a giveaway this week. So don’t miss out and enter today! (Details below)

1. Give us a quick bio: Born & raised in Minneapolis,MN; Downers Grove, IL; Atlanta, GA and St Clair, MI.  All that travel gave me the bug so today traveling is one of my favorite pastimes.  It exposed me to so much and introduced me to people from all walks of life and cultures.  I’m also a Vietnam veteran. That experience derailed my intentions to go to art school and to teach, so I wound up “making a living” in telecommunications – traveling and teaching.  After a number of years in the corporate world it was time to do something new, so I came back to the arts.  When not busy making art I serve on two Boards of Directors – one for the Burnsville Visual Arts Society and one for Veterans in the Arts.  I am extremely proud of and gratified by my work in both organizations but particularly with the Veterans group.  I have a large wonderful family (I’m the oldest of seven) spread across the continental US – more travel opportunities.

2. Have you always been interested in the arts?: Always – since I was a young child.  I like making things with my hands, creating something from nothing.  I always had tremendous encouragement from my parents and from a wonderful art teacher early on.

3. Where does your inspiration come from?: Nature – textures, patterns, colors. Language, words, quotes and stories.  I derive inspiration from many sources.  I am particularly drawn to patinas; the marks and layers wrought by time and natural forces.  Think: lichens and moss on rocks, weathered copper, rust, peeling paint, old wood…etc.  Fellow artists that I am meeting and working with also are an important influence on my development and perception of my work.

4. You dabble in lots of different art, what is your favorite?: I currently work in oil+wax painting (also acrylics and mixed media), digital montages and art jewelry.  I am constantly photographing images for use in the digital montages or just as a reference for my other work.  I have self-published two books Echoes Off The Wall (Oaxacan Photos) and Digital Daydreams 1.0 (digital montages).  As far as a favorite art form – it would the one that I am working in at any given moment.   Today it has been oil+wax; tomorrow it will be art jewelry as I have a deadline to meet.  Don’t ask me to choose ‘cuz I love‘m all!

5. Any words of wisdom for our readers?  I will share with you a mantra and a signature that I am fond of and use constantly myself.  The mantra is: Now, Today, Don’t Wait Anymore. And the signature is: Be Well, Be Creative.

6. How can we obtain your work? Currently inquiries regarding availability, pricing & shipping for art or jewelry found on my website www.jamesedwardscherbarth.com should be emailed to me at jes@jamesedwardscherbarth.com. I should soon be announcing a partnership with an online art platform to present my 2D artworks and my art jewelry. Once established that will provide a quick and easy eCommerce option.

GIVEAWAY!

James is giving away one of two options for us this week: Either an autographed copy of his “little red book” entitled Just Three Words OR a signed print of his oil + wax abstract landscape Sedona (print size approx. 6.5×6.5 on 8.5×11 archival paper). Simply visit www.jamesedwardscherbarth.com and view his work. Leave us a comment telling us your favorite piece. The winner will be chosen at random. The winner will be announced Friday, July 29th. For an extra vote, Like Us on Facebook! Good luck!

Just Three Words by James Edward Scherbarth

Sedona

If you live in the Minneapolis area and would like to see James’ work, visit The Great Frame-Up in Burnsville, MN. Selected items from his Timeless Layers collection will be on display through August 11.

Lucky Grilled Cheese winners!

Happy Friday!  We have some exciting news for FIVE lucky HAP readers today who will soon be the proud new owners of Grilled Cheese,Please! cookbooks!  Congrats to Aimee, EmNey, Elizabeth, Dana & Jamieliz!

Check out their favorite recipes:
Aimee - Extra sharp cheddar slices, ripe tomato and thick crispy bacon! Yum!
EmNey – Sharp cheddar with avocado slices and crispy bacon!
Elizabeth – Grilled Cheese: minor obsession. Simple. Butter both sides of the bread. (Thank you, husband for this technique.) Shredded cheddar cheese on both sides of the bread. (It melts like a dream. The sharper the cheddar, the better the cheddar.) Ham, lightly crisped in the pan. (Thank you, husband.) And at the very last minute, crisp green apples sliced thin. (That’s right, right into the middle of the sandwich.) Hallelujah!
Dana – Sharp cheddar on sourdough bread. Add tomatoes and avocado if handy. But the classic is still the best to me. And I pretty much can’t eat it unless I have tomato soup to dunk it in. Like a previous post said….I have made it with mayo on the outside (back in college) and it was to die for. I have since moved back to butter to save a bit on calories…but am sometimes still tempted.
Jamieliz - Love grilled cheese with a nice slice of fresh tomato inside!

Thanks to everyone for entering and sharing your grilled cheese recipes.  Our mouths are watering!!

The winners were picked at random using a random generator from random.org.
