{Valentine’s GIVEAWAY} Hanna Martine’s Long Shot

It’s cold outside but the temperatures are rising over here at Haute Apple Pie for Valentine’s week! We are happy to bring you a Valentine’s giveaway from romance author and fellow foodie, Hanna Martine. Hanna is the author of the paranormal romance Elementals series, including Liquid Lies, Taste of Ice and Drowning in Fire (coming this April) as well as the contemporary romance Highland Games series. To add a little extra spice to your life, this week we will be giving away a copy of Long Shot.

Hanna Martine Long Shot

Here is what Long Shot is all about:

Jen Haverhurst is on the verge of becoming a partner in New York City’s top event planning company when her sister calls begging for help. The New Hampshire town of Gleann—where they spent many happy childhood summers—is in danger of losing its main attraction, the Highland Games. Jen reluctantly agrees to take over running the Games as well as helping with their aunt’s failing B&B. But she didn’t count on Leith MacDougall.

Before she left town ten years ago, Leith was a summer friend who grew into something much more. Since then, he’s become a legend of the Highland Games, winning three years in a row. Now retired, he’s just about ready to skip town to chase his own dreams of success.

But when Jen tries to convince Leith to stick around and help revive the Games, their youthful romance is revived into a very grown-up Highland affair…

We talked with Hanna to get a little insight on her life as an author as well as some of our favorite topics – food and parties!

hanna-sweater-pressGive us your one minute bio:

I write contemporary and paranormal romance novels, which means there’s always a happy ending for the couple in question. Sometimes there’s magic (paranormal), sometimes there isn’t (contemporary), but both kinds of books take place in the modern day. I left a decade of office work in order to show my daughter what it means to go after your dream. The only thing I’ve ever wanted to be is a novelist. I used to think I was going to be the next J.R.R. Tolkien or George R.R. Martin and write epic fantasy (and use lots of initials), but the fact I used to steal my mom’s romance novels in high school should have tipped me off that hot love stories were in my future. I live outside Chicago, but my heart resides in Australia.

Where did you get your inspiration for Long Shot?

I got married in Scotland (in a 700-year-old castle haunted by a ghost named Sebastian, but that’s a whole other story), and while we were there we stumbled across a local Highland games, which we LOVED. We spent a day in the sun drinking beer, watching men in kilts throw huge, heavy implements around a field for sport, and listening to Scottish folk music. When we returned to the States, we discovered that there’s an annual Highland games ten minutes from our house. We’ve become reliable attendees. In 2012, I was sitting there watching these incredible male athletes strut around the field in sexy kilts and I was like, hmmmm….romance novel hero???? Up until then I’d only written paranormal romance, but I concocted two contemporary stories centered around the concept of the Highland games in America, and I sold them to my editor at Berkley Sensation/Penguin Random House. I used some of my previous experience planning events in my old job to create the character of Jen, who returns to the town of her heart to revive its spirit and its local Highland games.

If you were to pair this book with a meal and beverage, what would it be?

Food and drink, say no more! This book is casual and fun, yet sexy and mature, so it must be beer. A hearty glass, not a light lager (ew, light beer!). An ale of some sort, red or cream. Paired with a crinkly paper pocket full of fish and chips. Not the flimsy, watery kind, but the dark brown, thickly battered, crunchy/crispy slabs of flaky fish that put you in heaven. Pair that with hot, firm chips (potato skin still on, preferably), and you’re good to go.

Just like Jen from Long Shot – we love to plan. What would be your ideal party or event to plan?

My ideal party to plan would be a huge outdoor event with all my friends and family. Like a wedding, but not, haha. Food stations providing a wide variety of upscale picnic food, all sorts of lawn games set up and ready to go, tons of kids screaming around. It would be by a lake or the ocean, so we could play and drink and eat all day, watch the sun go down over the water, and then I’d have the world’s greatest private firework display.

Thanks to Hanna for sharing with us and helping us add a little heat this Valentine’s Day!

{Giveaway} Dog City & Co. sWag Pack!

When Dog City & Co. reached out to share their petlover products with us, I was charmed by their designs and immediately went searching for my favorite breed (Lab, of course). From mugs to prints to pillows, they have lots of sweet and affordable gift options for your pet-obsessed fam and friends (stocking stuffers anyone??). Plus, they donate a portion of every sale to animal shelters and other rescue-related organizations, which makes me like them even more.
After scoping out the goods they were kind enough to send me, my pooch, Lena, and I can vouch that they are dog and owner approved. Their slightly oversized mug is perfect for your weekend lattes or adding a little extra whipped cream to your cocoa and the tote is roomy enough to use as a yoga/gym bag or to stash a blanket, treats and tennis balls for a trip to the dog park.

{Giveaway} sWag Pack!

This week one lucky reader will win a Dog City & Co. sWag Pack including a coffee mug, tote bag and decal in the breed design of your favorite pup (or cat).

How to Enter:
1. Leave us comment below telling us 3 things about your favorite pet (dog or cat!) – their name, breed, and one thing about them that reminds you why you’re a pet owner.
2. Like us on Facebook for an extra entry
3. Like Dog City & Co. on Facebook for an extra entry

The random winner will be selected and announced this Friday.

{GIVEAWAY}: Super Snacks for Super Kids cookbook

Happy weekend to all of our HAP readers! Starting today, you have the fabulous opportunity to win the kid-friendly cookbook, Super Snacks for Super Kids by Sarah Fox MD and Julie Stephenson.

SuperSnacks cover

I attended the UW Writer’s Institute last weekend in Madison (for more on that, you can visit my journey to young adult authorship here) and had the pleasure of meeting the friendly staff of local Little Creek Press in Mineral Point, WI. When I saw this cookbook, my foodie brain kicked into gear. I wanted to land this beauty in the hands of one of our readers!

We’ve touched on the art of toddler food in a few other posts before. As hard as we try, it can be difficult to get healthy foods into the fingers of those finicky toddlers. Written by two moms who care about their kids’ nutrition, Super Snacks for Super Kids began as an initiative to bring in donations for the authors’ school wellness committee. With the help of Little Creek Press, these super moms have raised over $30,000 for their school’s program. All proceeds go to the Mineral Point School District Wellness committee.

In the book, you will find a collection of simple snack recipes packed with the nutrition your kids need to feel energized throughout the day. It’s divided into six sections: Snacks for Focus, Snacks for After School, Snacks for Play, Snacks for After Play, Snacks for A Crowd, and Staples. Each section contains recipes specifically designed to meet kids’ nutritional needs for their various activities.

The recipes in this book involve products that are easy to find and conform to our modern-day time constraints. You will also find tips for choosing the best foods and navigating your way through the grocery store to find the best choices for your wee ones. The book is not just good to read, but filled with beautiful photography, it is lovely to page through.

Authors Julie Stephensen and Sarah Fox also provide a way for you to create a fundraiser using their product. Check out the information on their site to learn how Super Snacks for Super Kids can be a healthy alternative to selling cookies!

So now, it is your chance to win a copy! You have until Thursday, April 25 at 11 pm CST to leave a comment on our blog about your kid’s (or nephew, niece, grandkids, friend’s kid, neighbor) favorite healthy treat! One entry per person. The winner will be announced on Friday, April 26.

You must be 18 and live in the continental United States to enter.

Thanks for entering!

{Giveaway!} Rosy Rings Apothecary Jar Candle Set

A few years ago three girls sat mindlessly chatting about recipes over lunch when the topic of a blog came up. At first it was more of a pop culture discussion than anything until that proverbial light went off. Why not start their own, they thought. It would make all that recipe sharing so much easier and it could be fun(!) and cute(!) – the things you say when you’re a girl. Soon after, our little blog was born.

Things at HAP have changed a bit over the years as our families and jobs have grown and changed. At the end of the day, we write for fun about real things, real food and the special touches of “hauteness” we try to bring to every day things.

In honor of our third blog-iversary, we’re giving away a swoon-worthy candle set with the help of our friends at Rosy Rings! We were smitten with the rustic-chic packaging of their Apothecary Jar Candle line, not to mention the classic-with-a-twist scents they come in like Fireside or Honey Tobacco – so perfect for fall.

Enter to Win!

You may have seen these pretties at Anthropologie or Nordstrom’s but today you can win them right here! In standard blog fashion, there’s a few ways you can enter to win:
1. Leave a comment sharing which Rosy Rings scent would light your fire this fall.
2. Like us on Facebook and leave a comment to let us know.
3. Like Rosy Rings on Facebook and leave a comment to let us know.

We’ll announce a random winner next Monday morning so best of luck! And in case you aren’t the lucky winner, Rosy Rings candles are reasonably priced plus they donate 15% of proceeds to charity every year making them a gift you can feel good about giving…even if it is to yourself.

{GIVEAWAY} Howling Wolf BBQ

This week we are celebrating dads by giving away what dad loves most – BBQ! We have had the honor and privilege of interviewing Ken Wolfe from Howling Wolf Gourmet Foods, who has enlightened us on us culinary BBQ perspective. If reading his story doesn’t make your mouth water for some delicious Father’s Day grilling, we aren’t sure what would! Please take the time to read about Howling Wolf and have the chance to win a BBQ combo pack with a bottle of the Howling Wolf Original BBQ sauce, Land & Sea Rub, and Dry Rub. Giveaway details are below.

Give us the one-minute bio of yourself.

I am a classically trained chef who has always had a passion for sauces, smoked foods, and BBQ. I started my career with a 3 1/2 year culinary apprenticeship in southern California, followed by two years of working as a chef in France. I spent most of my early career as a saucier, before moving up the ranks. Eventually I opened my own restaurant, Cafe Wyoming, in Dubois, Wyoming. At the Cafe, I featured my BBQ sauces and perfected my style of barbecuing. My ribs and sauce were mentioned in Jane & Michael Stern’s Roadfood 2005 edition. After six successful years, I sold the Cafe to focus on my sauces full time. I moved to Wisconsin five years ago and have been in the stores four years.

Tell us a little bit about how Howling Wolf BBQ got started?

I have always had a passion for BBQ growing up and as I progressed in the culinary field I was continually thinking of the possibility of starting a food line to eventually free me from the restaurant business. That line naturally became my own gourmet take on BBQ.

What inspires your BBQ flavors?

I love the diversity of flavors that the spice world offer. Combined with my passion for BBQ, I have been able to create some extra ordinary flavors that are both flavorful and very versatile. For example, My Cranberry Orange BBQ can be used as a glaze for Asian sweet and sour, and my original can be mixed with yogurt and takes on a middle eastern flavor.

Are you a gas or charcoal man?

At times gas is convenient but not only do I prefer charcoal but I prefer to make my own.

Describe your perfect BBQ meal.

I am always happy to devour a rack of perfectly smoked pork spare ribs but nothing beats a beautifully seasoned and smoked pork shoulder sandwich on a homemade roll topped with my homemade aged slaw and a good I.P.A.

How will you be spending your Father’s Day?

I will be doing something outside with my family most likely in the garden and it will most certainly end up with a nice dinner off the grill.

In order to win the Howling Wolf BBQ Combo Pack, visit the Howling Wolf website and check out the different products and recipes. Leave us a comment on this post telling us how you would like to use a Howling Wolf product to put a smile on dad’s face this Father’s Day.

For an extra vote – like Haute Apple Pie on Facebook and let us know you did!

You must enter your comment by Thursday, June 14, 2012 at 11 p.m. CST. The winner of the giveaway will be announced Friday, June 15, 2012 and will be chosen at random. You must be over the age of 18 to vote and live in the Continental United States.

Happy Father’s Day to all those awesome dads out there!
